Every week, Quality Wool Managing Director Mark Dyson brings you his summary of the week in wool.
The Australian wool market finished the final sale before the three‑week mid‑year recess on a weaker note, with the benchmark Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) falling 28 cents to close at 1,873 cents.
Losses were recorded across all sectors, led by declines in the Merino fleece market.
Fremantle returned to the selling roster, lifting the national offering to 31,751 bales, up 10,521 on the previous sale series.
Merino fleece Micron Price Guides (MPGs) recorded widespread losses, ranging from 50 cents lower to 15 cents higher across the two selling days.
After coming within 11 cents of the 2,000‑cent mark last month, the EMI has now fallen 116 cents over the past 10 selling days.
The softer market saw the passed‑in rate lift to 15.3 per cent as some growers chose not to accept lower prices.
Skirtings generally followed the fleece market lower, although well‑styled, low vegetable matter lots attracted stronger competition and recorded smaller losses.
After several weeks of gains, the crossbred sector also weakened, with Southern 26 to 28‑micron MPGs falling by between 42 and 50 cents.
The oddment market eased, with the Merino Carding (MC) indicators averaging an 18‑cent decline.
The market now enters the three‑week mid‑year recess, with auction sales resuming in the week beginning Monday, 17 August.
