In what was the final sale of the 2021 calendar year this week, the Australian wool market was unable to maintain its upward trajectory after a month of gains, recording a small overall loss of two cents to close at 1,358c/kg.
While there were minimal price movements in the Eastern centres on the first selling day, there were losses in the West (selling last) with fleece MPGs in Fremantle dropping by
The second selling day was more positive, with many MPGs recording positive movements.
Across the country, MPGs moved between ‑10 and +21 and the West bounced back from the previous day’s losses with strong gains.
It's worth noting that although the market recorded general overall losses, selected lots and microns recorded positive movements when compared to the previous series, due in part to strong buyer competition on selected lots of specific wools being chased to complete orders.
The EMI began the 2021 calendar year at 1,172 cents, then proceeded to gain 186 cents over the course of the year, an increase of 15.9%.
The total dollar amount sold for this year was 1.132 billion dollars. Due to the larger amount offered and the higher prices achieved this year, this was 332 million more last year.
The market now heads into the annual three‑week Christmas recess, with sales resuming the week beginning Monday, January 10th.
