Every week, Quality Wool Managing Director Mark Dyson brings you his summary of the week in wool.
The Australian wool market has enjoyed a price boost for the third consecutive week, with all sectors benefiting from the gains as the Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) added 26 cents to close at 1,427c/kg.
Although quantities traditionally decline as farmers begin cropping, wool continues to flow onto the market (41,298 bales
Main buyer interest continued to focus on higher yielding, lower vegetable matter types but all types and descriptions recorded rises, as buyers attempted to secure quantity in the rising market.
By the end of the week, individual Merino Price Guides (MPGs) for Merino fleece had risen
These rises, combined with solid increases in the skirting, crossbred and oddment markets, were what pushed up the EMI.
Currency is often mentioned as a driving force in market movements for Australian wool as the bulk of it is traded in US dollars, and it had a profound effect this week as the AUD dropped below 70 US cents for the first time since late‑January.
The reduced AUD meant buyer purchases in USD represented good value compared to last week’s prices.
This was reflected when viewing the EMI in USD terms with the EMI actually losing ground, falling by three US cents to close the week at 994 US cents.
Next week’s national offering increases, with 46,129 bales currently expected to be offered.
