The Australian wool market has recorded an overall loss for the fifth straight week, with the AWEX Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) dropping 24 cents to close the week at 1,255c/kg.
The main catalyst for the losses was falls in the Merino fleece types, particularly in wool 19.0 micron and finer.
This means the number of weeks without a rise in the EMI has extended to 11, with week 51 of the previous season being the last time an increase was recorded.
A sharp drop in the Australian dollar compared to the US was not enough to prevent the market falling, with the AUD dropping by 1.99 cents since the close of last week to 64.74 US cents.
In US dollar terms, the loss was even larger, with the EMI losing 41 US cents to close at 812 US cents.
This is the lowest point the USD EMI has been since October 2020.
Despite the weak start to the 2022/23 season, when compared to the same time last year the total dollar amount of wool sold at auction is tracking higher.
This season there has been $555 million of wool sold at auction, an increase of $55 when compared to the 2021/22 season.
This is due to there being 39,261 more bales offered this season.
Quantities for next week increase by over 25 per cent, with there expected to be 40,097 bales on offer in Fremantle, Melbourne and Sydney.
Selling will remain on Wednesday/Thursday due to a Monday Public Holiday in Sydney.
