Every week, Quality Wool Managing Director Mark Dyson brings you his summary of the week in wool.
The Australian wool market has recorded an overall loss of 11 cents this week, with the AWEX Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) finishing at 1,319c/kg.
From the opening of the sale, it was immediately apparent that the prices buyers were prepared to pay for fine Merino fleece types had been significantly reduced, and they continued to fall as the sale progressed.
By the end of the week, the individual Micron Price Guides (MPGs) across the country for 18.5 micron and finer had lost
In contrast, buyer sentiment on the medium/broad Merino fleece types was strong and the prices on offer for good style and spec wools 19.0 micron and coarser were at, or above, those achieved in the previous sale.
This was reflected in the MPGs for 19.
The ups and downs in the Merino fleece, combined with minimal movements in the skirting, oddment and crossbred sectors (with the exception of the 26.0 micron MPG which increased by 3.7%) were the catalyst for the overall drop in the EMI.
Due to a weakening in the Australian dollar (the AUD fell 1.66 US cents since the end of the previous sale), when viewed in USD terms the fall in the EMI was larger, losing 29 USc for the week, a reduction of 3.2 per cent.
Quantities for next week are expected to rise again, with there currently rostered to be 39,719 bales on offer in Fremantle, Melbourne and Sydney.
