Positive start to 2020/21

The 2020/21 wool selling season began on a positive note, with strong buyer sentiment pushing up Merino fleece prices nationally.

Micron Price Guides (MPGs) generally rose 3 ‑ 27 cents across the country, as the AWEX Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) gained six cents to close the first selling week at 1,116c/kg.

Many sellers were keen to take this first opportunity to sell in the new financial year and accept the prices on offer, reflected in the national passed in rate of only 5.1 per cent (the national fleece passed in rate was just over two per cent).

This was well below the yearly average of the previous season of 17 per cent, the highest figure since AWEX records began.

Skirtings reflected the fleece market gaining 20 ‑ 30 cents, while the cardings were the only sector to record overall losses, with locks, stains and crutchings losing 10 ‑ 20 cents, pushing the three carding indicators down by 14 cents.

Next week is the final sale before the three‑week July recess, taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday with 36,712 bales available to the trade.

Fremantle only has a one‑day sale (Wednesday), while Melbourne and Sydney are in operation both days.
