Every week, Quality Wool Managing Director Mark Dyson brings you his summary of the week in wool.
Australian wool sales resumed this week after the annual three‑week Christmas recess, with 52,940 bales offered nationally in the largest sale since March last year.
The large offering attracted strong demand to push prices higher across most Merino fleece types, with Micron Price Guides (MPGs) for 18.5 micron and finer rising by
This helped to push the AWEX Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) up by 15 cents for the week, finishing at 1,172c/kg.
Due to the continual strengthening of the Australian dollar since the previous sale (in the final sale of last year the Australian dollar was nearly two cents lower at 75.52 US cents), when viewed in US dollar terms the rise in the EMI was more significant.
The EMI added 33 US cents for the series, to close at 907 US cents. Over 24 per cent of the overall offering was crossbreds and this sector also received strong support, selling at very similar levels to those of the previous sale.
The oddment sector was the strongest performer (in percentage terms) for the sale, with the three Merino Carding indicators (MC) adding an average of 38 cents.
Next week’s offering remains fairly large, as accumulated wool continues to be offered.
There is currently 49,140 bales available to the trade, with all three centres in operation.
