Influenced heavily by currency movements, the Australian wool market has eased slightly this after two successive weeks of solid rises.
The AWEX Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) dropped four cents overall to close at 1,166c/kg, with all sectors losing ground.
Almost 47,000 bales were available to the trade, 3,220 more than the previous week, and there has been 62,672 more bales offered so far in the 2023/24 season compared to the previous (an increase of 8.5 per cent).
Movements in individual Micron Price Guides (MPGs) for Merino fleece nationally ranged between +26 cents (17.0‑micron MPG in Melbourne) to ‑41 cents (both the 18.5 and the 20.0‑micron MPGs in Fremantle).
Due to a strengthening of the Australian dollar (the AUD gained nearly a full cent compared to the USD), when viewed in USD terms the EMI recorded an overall increase, adding 8 US cents for the week to close at 776 US cents.
The total dollar amount of wool has now surpassed the corresponding sale of the previous season, with 971 million dollars’ worth of wool sold, an increase of 7 million year‑on‑year.
Interestingly, while Melbourne and Fremantle have increased their dollar amounts (+9 million and +11 million dollars respectively), Sydney has lost ground (minus 13 million), highlighting the larger falls that the finer Merino microns have experienced this year, thus more heavily impacting Sydney’s large Superfine selection.
Next week sees 47,917 bales expected to be offered nationally.
